Basically, it keeps things from over-traveling and slamming into other, more expensive components, absorbing that last bit of kinetic energy. Without it, you’d be bending rods or cracking cylinder heads.

When this STOPPER starts to wear down, or if it breaks apart, you’ll definitely notice things aren't quite right. Usually what happens is you get a new, harsher metallic clunk at the end of a cylinder's stroke, or maybe the feed system starts over-traveling a bit further than it should. That extra travel can put stress on other components, like seals or even the cylinder barrel itself. Sometimes, if it's really gone, you might even see some drift or inconsistent positioning in the component it's supposed to be limiting. It’s a subtle change at first, but it quickly escalates.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but it's important to get it done once you spot the wear. When you're in there, always take a good look at the surfaces it mates against.
