Without it, things would just drift, and that's when you start having bigger problems.

When this retainer starts to wear out or gets damaged, you'll usually notice things getting a bit sloppy in that assembly. If it's holding a bearing, you might start hearing a new, subtle knocking or a bit of a rumble that wasn't there before, especially under load. And don't forget to check the torque specs if it's a bolted retainer. It's easy to overtighten and distort things, or undertighten and have it back out, leading to the same issues you just fixed.
