When these retaining bits start to give up the ghost, usually what happens is the component it's supposed to be holding tight begins to vibrate or shift. You might start hearing a new rattle, or if it's securing a hydraulic line, you could see chafing on the hose or even a slow weep develop where it's rubbing against something it shouldn't. Sometimes, if it's holding a cover, you'll just notice the cover isn't sitting flush anymore, which lets dirt in where it doesn't belong.
