Its main job is to absorb rotational and side loads, allowing major components to pivot smoothly without metal-on-metal contact. The split design simplifies installation, especially in tight spaces where a solid bushing cannot be pressed in easily.

Properly functioning bushings are essential for drilling accuracy and overall rig stability. When a bushing wears out, it creates excessive play in the joint. For example, a worn bushing in a boom linkage can make it difficult to collar a hole accurately, leading to deviation and rework. This looseness also transfers shock loads directly to the pins and structural bores, accelerating wear on more expensive parts.

A key symptom of a failing bushing is a clunking sound or visible looseness when operating the boom. During routine inspections, check for play by moving the joint and look for signs of excessive wear or damage. Regular and correct greasing is the best way to maximize its service life. Replace both halves of the bushing at the same time to ensure a proper fit.
