Its main job is to take the abuse from whatever's sliding or rotating through it – think drill rods, feed cylinders, or even just general components that see a lot of back-and-forth action. It keeps the expensive main casting or bore from wearing out prematurely, basically saving your bacon on a much bigger repair down the line by absorbing all that friction and grit.

When this WEAR LIST starts giving up the ghost, you'll usually notice things getting a bit sloppy. The component it's meant to guide – maybe a feed cylinder rod or a drill rod guide – will start to have excessive play. You might hear a new clunking sound when the machine's operating, especially during direction changes, or feel some extra vibration that wasn't there before. Sometimes, if it's really gone, you'll even see accelerated wear on the part it was supposed to protect, because now it's rubbing directly against the main housing.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but don't just yank it out and slap a new one in. Always take a good look at the bore or housing it sits in for any scoring or damage that might have occurred once the old insert wore through. And here's a common one: make sure you're checking for any associated shims or retaining clips that might have come loose or need replacing too. A lot of guys just focus on the insert itself and forget the little bits that hold it all together or set the clearance.
