Full Technical Description
236 444 18 NOZZLE ASSY is what you rely on to keep the drill string and the hole itself clear of muck and cuttings. It’s essentially a sprayer, pushing water or air, sometimes a mix, down into the bore. The idea is to flush out all the debris that the bit grinds up, preventing it from packing around the drill string or getting re-ground. A good, consistent spray pattern from this thing means better penetration rates and less wear on your drill bit because it's not constantly trying to cut through its own waste. It’s a simple piece, but it does a critical job in maintaining drilling efficiency.
When this wash nozzle starts to go, you'll definitely notice it. Usually, what happens is the spray pattern gets weak, or it becomes uneven, sometimes just a dribble instead of a proper jet. You might see the cuttings aren't clearing out of the hole as effectively, leading to more regrinding of material, which really slows down your progress. A common symptom we see in the field is a noticeable drop in flushing pressure at the bit, or the pump working harder but not delivering the expected flow. If you’re pulling up the string and it’s caked with mud where it should be relatively clean, that’s a pretty good sign your wash nozzle is probably shot.
Changing one of these isn't usually a big deal, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Before you even thread the new one in, take a good look at the line feeding it. It's not uncommon for scale or small bits of debris to get lodged just upstream, which will just clog your brand-new nozzle right away. Give that line a quick flush if you can. Also, make sure the threads on the housing are clean and undamaged; you want that nozzle to seat correctly and not leak, otherwise, you're just losing pressure and wasting water.
