Its main job is to provide a smooth, consistent surface for a piston or other moving part to operate against. This keeps the more expensive, main housing bore from getting chewed up by friction and wear over time. It’s a sacrificial part, designed to take the abuse so the bigger components don't have to.

When this liner starts to wear thin or gets scored, you'll definitely notice a change in how the system behaves. If it's in a feed cylinder, for instance, you might see the feed rate become inconsistent or the rod start to drift a bit under load because internal leakage is picking up. Sometimes, you'll even hear a slight knocking or chattering sound coming from the cylinder as the piston isn't riding as smoothly as it should. Pressure fluctuations on your gauges, especially during a cycle, are also a pretty good indicator that something's not right inside.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a nightmare, but you've got to be meticulous. The biggest thing people often overlook is making sure the bore where the new liner sits is absolutely spotless and free of any burrs or old gasket material. Any imperfection there and you're just setting the new liner up for premature failure. While you're in there, always, always check the piston seals and guide rings. They usually take a beating right along with a worn liner, and reusing them is just asking for trouble down the road.
