It’s a simple piece of glass and housing, but it’s a big deal for keeping things safe and moving efficiently.

When one of these starts to go, it’s usually pretty obvious. You’ll either see a big crack right through the glass, or the whole assembly might get loose and start vibrating like crazy, making it impossible to actually see anything useful. Sometimes the reflective coating just degrades over time, especially if it’s been hit by a lot of dust and debris, and then everything looks blurry or dim. The main thing is, you lose that critical line of sight, which means the operator has to rely more on guesswork or getting out of the cab more often, slowing down the job and increasing the risk of an incident.

Replacing a side mirror isn't usually a tough job, but it’s one of those things that often gets put off until it's completely shattered. When you swap it out, make sure you're not just bolting it onto a bent bracket from the previous impact; straighten that out first if you can, or you’ll just be fighting it. Also, once it's on, take a minute to properly adjust it for the operator. You'd be surprised how many times I've seen a new mirror installed but never actually aimed right, making it almost as useless as the broken one. And keep it clean – a dirty mirror is just as bad as a broken one.
