283 352 50A COPPER SEAL This seal creates a static, pressure-tight barrier between a service cover and the main body of a component, such as a drifter gearbox or front head. Its primary function is to contain lubricating oil or hydraulic fluid while effectively blocking the entry of abrasive dust, grit, and water. Proper sealing is fundamental to protecting the gears, bearings, and pistons working inside.

A compromised or worn-out COPPER SEAL will typically lead to fluid leaks, which can starve the component of necessary lubrication and cause accelerated wear or overheating. For example, if this seal fails on a drifter's gear housing, the loss of oil can quickly lead to catastrophic gear failure. Leaks also introduce safety risks like slips and falls for personnel working near the rig.

The most common symptom of failure is a visible oil weep or an accumulation of greasy dirt around the edge of a cover plate. As a rule, this seal should be replaced any time the cover is removed for inspection or repair. Before fitting the new seal, make sure both metal surfaces are completely clean and free from any old gasket material or scoring.
