When one of these pins starts to give up the ghost, you'll usually notice some unwanted play in the assembly it's supposed to secure. That slop can translate into a few things: maybe a persistent rattle from that area, or if it's holding something like a feed beam extension, you might see it not quite holding its position solid, leading to inconsistent drilling depth or alignment issues. If it really goes bad, you could even have components shifting significantly, which is obviously a safety hazard and a big headache to fix out in the field.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a marathon, but take your time. Always clean out the bore it slides into, get rid of any old grease or crud that might be in there. A common oversight is not checking the mating holes for ovaling or excessive wear; if those bores are wallowed out, a new pin won't last long at all, and you'll be back at it sooner than you'd like. Also, make sure any associated retaining hardware, like cotter pins or snap rings, are replaced too – they're cheap insurance.
