In a rock drill, these seals are essential for the drifter's impact mechanism and the feed cylinders on the beam. They ensure that the energy from the hydraulic system is converted directly into percussion and feed force, without being lost to internal leakage.

When this seal begins to wear, hydraulic pressure can bypass the piston, leading to a noticeable drop in performance.
