Its main job is to provide a secure connection point for a nitrogen bottle, allowing a technician to accurately set the gas pre-charge pressure. This stored nitrogen pressure acts like a spring, providing the high-speed energy needed for the drifter's percussion mechanism to fracture rock effectively.

Located directly on the accumulator, which is typically mounted on the drifter body, this valve plays a key role in both performance and reliability. If the accumulator's nitrogen charge is too low, the drifter's piston can over-travel and cause severe mechanical damage. Conversely, if the pressure is too high, the impact energy drops, leading to slower drilling rates and reduced productivity.

A common sign of a problem is a slow nitrogen leak from the valve after charging, or difficulty in getting an accurate pressure reading. Always check for leaks with a soap solution before putting the rig back into service. If the valve is damaged or fails to seal, replace it immediately to prevent the accumulator from losing its charge during operation.
