When this little guy starts to go, you'll usually see it. The most obvious sign is a weeping cylinder rod or a greasy film building up around a shaft. If you let it go too long, that weep turns into a steady drip, and then you're losing hydraulic oil. Worse, if it's an external seal, dirt and water can get *in*, which is a fast track to scoring cylinder walls or wrecking bearings. You might even notice the system needing more frequent top-ups, or a slight sluggishness if the internal leakage is bad enough.

Replacing one of these isn't rocket science, but getting it right matters.
