When one of these seals starts to go bad, you’ll usually notice a few things. If it’s in a cylinder, the rod might start drifting or creeping, especially under load – like when you’re trying to hold a feed beam steady. Or, if it’s a dynamic seal, you might see external leaks, a slow weep that turns into a steady drip. Internally, you’ll get pressure loss across the component, which means sluggish operation, maybe even inconsistent impact if it's in a rock drill. Sometimes, you'll hear a slight hiss or even a gurgling sound as fluid bypasses it.

When you're replacing one of these, make sure the bore or shaft surface is absolutely clean and free of any nicks or burrs. Even a tiny scratch can tear a new seal right away, and then you're back to square one. Also, don't forget to lubricate it properly with clean hydraulic oil before installation; it helps it slide in without damage and seats it correctly. A lot of guys rush that step, and it causes more headaches down the line than you'd think.
