A solid, unworn BOOM HEAD is essential for maintaining drilling pattern accuracy and minimizing stress on the entire positioning system.

Over time, the pin bores can wear and become oval, or fatigue cracks can develop from the constant vibration and high loads. When this happens, you'll notice excessive play and movement at the end of the boom, making it difficult to collar a hole accurately. This looseness transmits extra shock back into the boom and rig, which can lead to premature failure of pins, bushings, and hydraulic components.

During routine maintenance, always inspect the BOOM HEAD for any signs of cracking, especially around the welds and pin holes. Check for looseness by attempting to move the feed assembly while the rig is stationary. If significant play is detected or cracks are found, the head should be replaced immediately to prevent a major failure and ensure operator safety.
