You'll start seeing things like intermittent electrical faults if it's over a sensor plug, or maybe a bit of rust on a hydraulic test port that shouldn't be there. It’s not going to cause a catastrophic failure usually, but it’s a slow killer. Over time, that exposed area will corrode, seize up, or short out, and then you’re chasing down a much bigger problem than just replacing a simple cap. You might notice a sensor reading acting flaky, or a connection that just won't seat right anymore because it's full of crud.

When you're doing your walk-arounds or scheduled services, just give these caps a quick look. They're cheap to replace, and it saves a headache later. If it's cracked, stiff, or just gone, swap it out. Before you put the new one on, take a second to clean whatever it was protecting – blow out the connector, wipe down the port.
