Its job is to scrape off all the muck – dirt, dust, mud, whatever crud is trying to get in there – before it can reach the main rod seal. If this WIPER isn't doing its job, that grit gets past it and starts chewing up your more critical seals, leading to bigger headaches down the line. It's a small part, but it keeps the nasty stuff out of your hydraulics.

When this WIPER starts to go bad, you might not see a huge hydraulic leak right away, because it's not the primary sealing element. What you will start noticing is the rod looking a bit too shiny or even gritty after a cycle, especially if you're working in dusty or muddy conditions. Sometimes you'll see a fine film of oil mixed with dirt on the rod that the WIPER just isn't clearing anymore. Over time, that contamination gets past it and starts scoring the rod, and then your actual rod seal won't last long at all. You'll eventually get external leaks from the main seal, but the WIPER failing is usually the root cause.

Replacing these isn't usually a huge job if you catch it early, but it's often overlooked during routine seal replacements. When you're tearing down a cylinder for any reason, always take a good look at this WIPER. Make sure it's still flexible and hasn't hardened up or cracked. And here's the kicker: always clean the rod thoroughly before installing a new WIPER. Any residual grit from the old one will just prematurely wear out the new one. Don't cheap out on these; they save you from much bigger repairs.
