SLEEVE 3217 9978 74 is typically what you'll find supporting a pivot pin or a shaft in a linkage, maybe on a feed beam or a boom joint. Its main job is to provide a replaceable wear surface, so the actual housing or main component doesn't get chewed up. It keeps things running smooth, reduces friction, and maintains proper alignment, which is critical for consistent operation and avoiding undue stress on other parts. It's basically a sacrificial bearing surface.

When these sleeves start to wear out, you’ll definitely notice some slop in the joint. Usually, what happens is you get excessive play, which can translate to a noticeable clunking sound when the component moves, especially under load. If it’s on something like a feed cylinder pivot, you might see the drill string not tracking straight, or the feed movement might feel a bit jerky. Over time, that play just gets worse, putting more stress on the pins and the main housing bores, which is exactly what these sleeves are supposed to prevent.

When you’re replacing one of these, always make sure to check the condition of the pin it supports. A worn sleeve often means the pin has taken some abuse too, and you don’t want to put a new sleeve on a grooved pin. Also, don't forget to properly grease the new sleeve during installation and make sure the grease zerks are clear and taking grease. It’s a simple thing, but a lot of premature wear comes from folks skipping that initial grease or not checking the zerk.
