It’s there to take some of the load and keep the bigger components locked into their proper alignment, which is crucial when you’re pushing into rock.

When this stay starts to give up, usually what happens is you’ll notice things aren't quite as rigid as they should be. You might start hearing some new creaks or groans coming from the mast area, especially when the feed is really pushing or pulling. Sometimes, if it’s really worn or cracked, you’ll even see a slight misalignment in the feed beam itself, or maybe the drill string isn't running as true. It puts extra strain on other mounting points and can even lead to premature wear on bushings or cylinder pins because everything's just a bit out of whack.

Replacing one of these isn’t usually a huge job, but it’s important to get it done once you spot an issue. Always check the bolts and the surrounding structure for any signs of fatigue or cracking when you’re in there. A lot of guys just swap the stay and forget to properly torque down all the fasteners, or they don't check for damage on the frame where it mounts. Make sure those mounting points are clean and undamaged too, otherwise, the new stay won't hold up for long.
