Sitting right behind the primary seal inside the hammer cylinder, this ring blocks hydraulic oil from creeping past the piston under spike pressures. Without a solid backup ring in that groove, high fluid forces will push the primary seal into the clearance gap and shred it. Good heat tolerance keeps the ring from softening up when the hammer runs hot all shift.
