Without it, the system would be running blind, unable to react to changes in load or demand.

When one of these starts to go bad, you'll usually notice some pretty erratic behavior. And when you put the new one in, don't forget to check the port it screws into for any debris or thread damage. A lot of guys just swap them out and forget to clean up the port, which can lead to leaks or an inaccurate reading right off the bat. Once it's in, a quick function test and maybe a calibration check if the system allows, and you should be good to go.
