Full Technical Description
TEMP. SENSOR 3718 0402 11 is what tells the control system just how hot things are getting in a specific spot – could be the hydraulic oil, the engine coolant, or even an air compressor discharge line. It's basically the rig's thermometer. The signal it sends back is critical for the machine to regulate itself, like kicking on a cooler fan or, if things get too hot, even derating the engine to prevent a meltdown. Without it, the computer's flying blind on temperature.
When one of these sensors starts to go bad, you usually won't get a catastrophic failure right away, but you'll definitely see some weird stuff. Often, the readings will start to drift, showing temperatures that are either too high or too low compared to what you know is normal. Or, worse, it might just flatline, giving a constant value even when the system is clearly heating up or cooling down. That's when you start getting false alarms, or even worse, no alarm when there should be one, leading to things like hydraulic oil overheating without the cooling system engaging properly. You might even notice the engine fan cycling on and off erratically, or the rig just feeling sluggish because the system thinks it's too hot and is pulling power.
Replacing these isn't usually a huge job, but you gotta make sure you're checking the wiring harness and connectors real good while you're in there. A lot of times, the sensor itself is fine, but the connection is corroded or vibrated loose, giving you those intermittent readings. Always clean the area thoroughly before installing the new one, and make sure the threads are sealed properly if it's a threaded type, otherwise you'll be chasing leaks or getting bad readings from moisture ingress. Don't just swap it and walk away; give the system a quick once-over, especially the associated wiring.
