When this part starts to wear out, you'll usually notice it. The most common symptom is a distinct change in the sound coming from the gearbox – often a new grinding or whining noise, especially under load. You might also start seeing excessive backlash or play in the rotation head or feed system. If it's really gone, you could even experience a noticeable drop in drilling torque or inconsistent feed rates, almost like the rig is struggling more than it should. A common oversight is not properly cleaning out the old oil and any metal debris before refilling with fresh, clean gear oil. That new part won't last long if it's swimming in contaminated lubricant from the get-go.
