It's a fundamental piece for getting any real work done.

When this PINION starts wearing out, you’ll definitely notice it. Usually what happens is a distinct whine or a grinding noise coming from the gearbox, especially when the rig is under load. If it's in the rotation unit, you might feel the drill string struggling to turn smoothly, or even binding up intermittently. Sometimes, if you're checking the gear oil, you'll find fine metallic particles, which is a dead giveaway that something inside is chewing itself up. The whole system might just feel sluggish, not responding like it should.

Swapping one of these out isn't a job you want to rush; it means opening up the gearbox, which is always a bit of a project. The most important thing to remember when you're in there is to thoroughly inspect the mating gear – whatever this PINION meshes with. A worn PINION almost always means the ring gear or other counter-gear has taken a beating too.
