Without a good one, you've just got a housing and a shaft, not a working pump.

When this IMPELLER starts to wear down, usually from cavitation or just plain old abrasive particles in the fluid, you'll notice a real drop-off in pump efficiency. The flow rate goes down, and you might see pressure fluctuations on your gauges, or maybe even a higher operating temperature if it's a cooling pump. Sometimes, you'll hear a distinct cavitation noise – kind of a rattling or grinding sound from the pump itself, especially if the vanes are pitted or broken. That's a pretty clear sign it's not moving fluid like it should be, and you're losing performance.

Replacing an IMPELLER isn't usually a huge job, but it's critical to check the pump housing for any scoring or damage when you're in there. Make sure the new IMPELLER seats correctly on the shaft and that you're using the right torque specs for any retaining nuts or bolts. A common oversight is not checking the condition of the shaft seal while the pump's open – it's cheap insurance against a leak down the road, and you're already halfway there.
