Its primary function is to maintain precise alignment of the shafts, which is essential for transferring power smoothly and efficiently. The housing also acts as a sealed container, holding the necessary gear lubricant and preventing dust, water, and debris from entering the sensitive mechanical parts.

A failure of this housing can have significant consequences for drilling operations. For example, a crack in the housing can lead to a rapid loss of gear oil, causing the rotation gears and bearings to overheat and seize. Misalignment from a warped or damaged housing introduces vibration, which reduces drilling efficiency and can cause secondary damage to the rotation motor, leading to costly, unplanned downtime.
