WASHER, LOCK

049 110 05 WASHER, LOCK is one of those small but absolutely critical bits that keeps things from shaking themselves apart on a drill rig. You'll find these tucked under nuts in high-vibration areas, like around the feed motor mounts, the main frame connections, or even on some of the hydraulic manifold blocks. Its job is pretty straightforward: it digs in a bit, creating friction and preventing that nut from backing off when the rig's hammering away, tramming across rough ground, or just sitting there vibrating. Without it, things work loose, plain and simple, and that's when you start having bigger issues.

When one of these lock washers starts to give up, or if it wasn't torqued right in the first place, usually what happens is you'll start to see fasteners loosening up. Maybe a mounting bolt on a pump or a motor starts to back out a bit. You might even hear a subtle rattle or feel a new vibration coming from an area that was previously solid. It’s not always dramatic, but that slight play can lead to bigger problems, like misaligned components, increased wear on bushings, or even cracked housings if the vibration gets bad enough. It’s a slow creep, but it’s trouble you want to catch early.

Replacing these is usually pretty simple – just make sure you’re using the correct size and material for the application. Don't ever reuse a lock washer; they're designed to deform and bite once, so they lose their effectiveness if you try to put them back on. And here’s a common one: always check the mating surfaces. If the nut or the component surface is chewed up, that washer isn't going to bite properly, and you'll be back doing the job again sooner than you think. Torque specs are important, but that fresh bite is key to keeping things tight.
