PIPE NIPPLE (P)

You’ll find these little threaded connectors bridging the gap between a hose and a valve, or maybe linking two sections of rigid pipe. Their main job is just to provide a solid, leak-free pathway for fluid – whether it’s high-pressure oil, compressed air, or water for dust suppression. If it’s not doing its job, you’ve got problems, plain and simple.

When one of these nipples starts to go, usually what you’ll see first is a slow weep around the threads, or maybe a tiny pinhole leak if it’s corroded or been stressed. On a rig, that often translates to a gradual pressure drop in a specific circuit, or you might just notice the ground getting wet under a certain section of the machine. If it really lets go, you're looking at a full-blown burst, and then you've got a real mess, plus whatever system it was feeding is down hard until you get it sorted.

Replacing these isn't rocket science, but don't skimp on the thread sealant or tape. Make sure you clean the threads on both ends properly before you even think about screwing it in. And here’s a common one: people often forget to check if the old nipple actually failed because of overtightening or vibration fatigue. Give the surrounding connections a quick once-over while you're in there; sometimes the nipple is just the symptom, not the root cause of the issue.
