When this TOP SUB starts wearing out or gets damaged, you'll definitely notice it. Usually what happens is the component it's supposed to be stopping will start traveling further than it should. You might hear a much sharper, harder *clunk* or *bang* when a cylinder reaches its end of stroke, instead of the usual damped TOP SUB. Over time, that extra impact energy can lead to stress cracks forming around the mounting points for the TOP SUB itself, or even in the main structure of the rig. It's a clear sign something's not right and you're putting undue stress on other components.

Replacing one of these isn't rocket science, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, always check the surrounding area for any signs of deformation or fatigue that might have occurred because the old TOP SUB was worn out. You want to make sure the new one has a solid, flat surface to mount to. And don't forget the hardware; make sure you're using the correct grade bolts and torquing them to spec. A loose TOP SUB is almost as bad as a missing one, letting things rattle and bang around, which just accelerates wear on everything else.
