When this ROPE starts to go, you'll often notice a bit of a shudder or inconsistent movement in the mast, especially under load. Sometimes you'll hear a slight creaking or groaning as it stretches unevenly or individual strands begin to fray. If you start seeing visible wear, like broken wires, flattened sections, or even a noticeable thinning in spots, that's your clear signal. It can also make the feed system feel sluggish or even bind up a bit if the ROPE isn't running smoothly through the sheaves anymore, impacting your penetration rate.

Replacing this isn't just about swapping out the old for the new. Always take the time to inspect all the sheaves, rollers, and guides it runs over. A worn sheave can chew up a brand-new ROPE in no time, and that's a really common oversight that costs rigs a lot of money. Make sure your tension is set correctly after installation too; too loose and it'll jump or spool improperly, too tight and you're just putting unnecessary stress on the entire feed system and the ROPE itself.
