516996A SEAL, RUBBER this little guy is usually found doing the dirty work of keeping hydraulic fluid where it belongs, or sometimes keeping dust and water out of a bearing or a cylinder rod. Think of it as the bouncer for your oil, making sure it doesn't sneak out and cause a mess, or letting contaminants sneak in and wreck things. It’s a pretty critical barrier, often working under a fair bit of pressure or just keeping things clean in a dynamic spot.

If this seal starts to go, you’ll usually notice a slow weep first, maybe just a damp spot around a cylinder rod or a fitting. Ignore that, and it’ll turn into a steady drip, then a stream. On a drill, that means you're losing hydraulic pressure where you need it, or worse, you're getting grit into a system that really can't handle it. I’ve seen cylinders get scored up fast because a simple seal let go and nobody caught it early enough. You might even feel a bit of sluggishness in a function if it’s an internal seal letting pressure bypass.

When you're replacing one of these, always make sure the surface it's sealing against is perfectly clean and smooth. Even a tiny scratch can tear a new seal right away. Don't forget to check for any burrs on the shaft or housing edges during installation; that's a common rookie mistake that'll have you doing the job twice. A little bit of clean hydraulic oil or grease on the seal itself before you slide it in helps a ton too, just to prevent any initial damage.
