Without it, you'd just have oil spraying everywhere the moment you hit the hydraulics, and nothing would work.

When one of these starts to go, or the bolts loosen up, you’ll usually see oil weeping around the connection, maybe a slow drip at first. If it gets worse, you'll notice pressure drops in that circuit, and the rig might start acting sluggish, or a function might not respond like it should. Sometimes you even hear a slight hiss if air is getting sucked in on the return side, though with pressure lines, it's usually just a mess you're dealing with.

Replacing these isn't rocket science, but you've got to make sure the O-ring is seated correctly and is the right material for the fluid. Always check the mating surface on the pump or valve for any scoring before you put the new one on. And don't forget to torque the bolts properly – too loose, it leaks; too tight, you can deform the flange or damage the O-ring. A little anti-seize on the bolt threads helps for next time too, makes life easier.
