Without a good, solid grip from these, you're not going to get much done, or worse, you'll be fighting the rig all day.

When these jaws start to wear out, you’ll notice it pretty quick. The most common thing is the rod slipping in the chuck, especially when you're trying to break a stubborn joint. You might hear a grinding or chattering noise as the chuck tries to grip but can't quite hold. Sometimes, you'll even see scoring marks on your drill rods where the worn JAW isn't making full contact. If you're seeing inconsistent impact or rotation, or if breaking out feels sluggish, chances are these jaws are getting tired and need a look.

Replacing these isn't too complicated, but it's crucial to do it right. Always make sure you clean out the chuck body thoroughly before dropping in new jaws; any grit or old grease can prevent them from seating properly. And here’s a common one: don't just replace the JAW and forget about the actuating cylinder. Give that cylinder a good once-over for any leaks or signs of internal wear, because a weak cylinder won't let even new jaws grip like they should.
