550 030 32 FILLING DEVICE is the guts of how you get that feed beam or boom to angle up and down. It’s what lets you set your drill string at the right attack angle for the rock, whether you're going vertical or trying to hit a specific incline. Basically, it’s a pivot point, often with a couple of hydraulic cylinders pushing and pulling to get the exact tilt you need. Without it, you’re stuck drilling straight ahead, which isn't much good for anything but a quarry.

When this unit starts going south, you’ll usually notice it first as a bit of slop or play in the feed beam. That precise angle you set? It might not hold as steady, or you’ll see the whole assembly drift a little when the hydraulics are neutral. Sometimes, you'll hear a new creaking or groaning sound as the cylinders try to compensate for worn pins and bushings, or maybe the tilt just feels sluggish, like it's fighting you. If it gets really bad, you might even see the feed beam visibly wobble a bit during tramming, which is a clear sign something's seriously loose in the pivot.

When you're swapping one of these out, or even just doing a routine inspection, don't just focus on the cylinders. Always give a good hard look at all the pivot pins and their bushings. They take a beating, and often get overlooked until there's significant play. Make sure to check for any hairline cracks around the weld points where the unit mounts to the frame too; stress can really build up there over time. And for crying out loud, grease the new one properly before you put it into service – a lot of guys forget that initial shot.
