It carries the entire weight of the feed and drifter while allowing for precise tilting and swinging movements. All the forces generated during drilling—thrust, rotation, and percussion—are transferred through this single component back into the boom and carrier.

Wear or damage to the boom head directly impacts drilling accuracy and safety. For instance, when the pin bores become worn and elongated, the entire feed assembly develops excessive play, making it difficult to collar holes precisely. This misalignment can lead to stuck drill steel and unnecessary stress on the drifter, ultimately slowing down the entire round.

Inspect the boom head regularly for any signs of cracking, especially around the welds and pin bores. If you notice the boom is difficult to position accurately or seems to wander, check for looseness at this connection point. When installing a replacement, always check the condition of the pins and bushings to restore the joint's original integrity.
