It's designed to take the brunt of whatever the drill site throws at it – rock chips, dust, mud, even the occasional stray tool. This keeps the actual glass from getting scratched up or outright shattered, which is a huge deal for maintaining clear visibility and, more importantly, keeping the operator safe from flying debris.

When this protector starts to wear out or gets damaged, the first thing you'll usually notice is a significant drop in visibility. It gets hazy, scratched, or even develops cracks, making it really tough to see your drill point or the surrounding area, especially when the sun hits it just right or with your work lights on at night. Sometimes, if it's really loose or badly broken, you might even hear it rattling around in its frame, which tells you it's not providing proper protection to the inner window anymore.

Swapping this out isn't a complicated job, but it's one of those things that often gets put off until visibility becomes a serious issue.
