PISTON ROD
The 550 236 98 ROD, PISTON is the workhorse inside your rig's hydraulic cylinders, directly converting fluid pressure into mechanical movement. It's built to take a beating, pushing and pulling heavy loads. Keeping this rod in good shape is key to preventing leaks and maintaining precise control over your drilling operations.

Full Technical Description
550 236 98 ROD, PISTON is the backbone of whatever cylinder it's in, whether that's for the feed, boom, or even the rotation unit. It’s what transmits the hydraulic force from the oil pushing on the piston directly into mechanical movement. Think of it as the main push-pull component; it’s gotta be tough to handle all that back and forth action, day in and day out, moving heavy steel and taking the brunt of the work.
When one of these starts to wear out, usually what happens is you’ll notice some scoring or pitting on the chrome surface. That’s a big problem because it chews up the rod seals, leading to external leaks you can’t ignore. But even before that, if the rod gets bent or the internal bearing surfaces wear, you might see the cylinder start to drift under load, or the movement might get sluggish and inconsistent. Sometimes you’ll even hear a slight knocking or feel a vibration if it’s really bad, especially if it's a critical feed cylinder.
Look, when you’re swapping out a PISTON ROD, don’t just slap the new one in. Always take a good look at the cylinder barrel for any scoring or damage that might have caused the original rod to fail, or that could damage the new one. And for crying out loud, always replace *all* the cylinder seals – the rod seal, wiper, and piston seals – at the same time. You’ve got the cylinder apart anyway; it’s false economy to reuse old seals, even if they look okay. It'll save you a headache and another cylinder job down the line.
