CARRIER (REAR)

550 249 89 CARRIER (REAR) is essentially the housing that holds the primary seal in position, usually around a hydraulic cylinder rod or sometimes a rotating shaft. Its job is pretty straightforward: make sure that seal stays put and does what it’s supposed to, which is keeping the hydraulic oil inside and all the dirt and grime out. Without a good carrier, the seal would just get pushed out of place or chewed up pretty fast, leading to leaks and bigger headaches.

When this carrier starts to wear out, or if the seal it's holding begins to fail, you’ll typically spot a slow weep or even a steady drip of oil around the rod. Sometimes, if the wear is uneven, you might notice the cylinder acting a bit sluggish or inconsistent in its movement, almost like it’s catching. Another tell-tale sign can be a slight hiss if air is getting past, or if the system pressure isn't holding quite right because of internal bypass due to a compromised seal assembly.

Swapping one of these out isn't usually rocket science, but you really need to make sure the bore it slides into is clean and smooth. Don't just throw a new one in if the old one was trashed; always try to figure out *why* it failed in the first place. A common oversight is not checking the rod itself for scoring or damage, because a rough rod will just tear up your new seal and carrier in no time. Also, double-check any retaining clips or bolts are properly seated and torqued.
