It’s absolutely critical for getting that oil right where it needs to be, ensuring everything moves freely and doesn’t wear out prematurely from friction and heat.

When this part starts to go south, you’ll usually notice a few things. First off, your drill might start sounding a bit dry, maybe even a little squeaky or just not hitting with the same punch. If you pull the drill apart, you'll probably see signs of inadequate lubrication – scoring on the piston, worn rifle bar splines, or even rust if it’s been really bad. Sometimes, you’ll see oil consumption drop way off, or conversely, it might just start dumping oil if the adjustment or internal components are shot. The drill won't cycle right, and you'll burn through bits and shanks faster than usual, costing you time and money.

Changing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but it’s important to get it right. When you swap it out, always make sure the oil flow adjustment is set correctly for your specific drill and application – that’s a common oversight. Too little oil and you’re back to square one with wear; too much and you’re just wasting oil and making a mess. Also, take a minute to check the lines leading to and from it for any blockages or leaks.
