Without it, you'd get a lot more slop in the system, leading to increased vibration and uneven wear on other, more expensive components further down the line. It's there to keep everything tracking straight and minimize deflection.

When this stabilizer starts wearing out, you’ll definitely notice some changes in how the rig feels. Usually, the first thing is increased vibration up through the feed system or even the drill string itself, especially when you're collaring a new hole or pulling out. You might also hear a new knocking or rattling sound coming from the feed carriage. What happens is the clearances open up, and the drill string or feed beam starts to 'walk' more than it should, causing accelerated wear on your centralizers, feed chain rollers, and even impacting drilling accuracy.

When you're swapping it out, always make sure you thoroughly clean the mounting surface – any old grit or crud left behind can cause the new stabilizer to wear out prematurely. And here's a common one: don't forget to inspect the mating surface it runs against. If that's scored or damaged, even a brand new stabilizer won't last long, and you'll be back doing the job sooner than you want.
