Located inside the drifter's rotation mechanism, it allows the operator to separate percussion from rotation. A worn or failing clutch directly impacts drilling efficiency. Symptoms often include weak or inconsistent rotation, especially under high load, which can significantly slow down your penetration rate. If the clutch starts to slip, it generates excess heat and can contaminate the hydraulic system with fine metal particles, leading to premature wear on other components.

Listen for any grinding or whining noises coming from the drifter, as this can indicate a problem with the clutch. This assembly is a wear item that is typically replaced during a major drifter overhaul.
