But sometimes, before you even see a drip, you might start getting some sluggish or inconsistent movement from that particular cylinder. That's because the gland isn't just sealing; it's also providing a bit of a wiper action. If it's worn, it lets contaminants past, and those fine particles can start to score the rod or even get into the fluid, causing internal wear on other components. You might also see a slight 'chatter' or feel a bit of resistance when the rod extends or retracts, especially if it's really gone bad.

Replacing these isn't usually a huge job, but it's one you don't want to put off. When you're in there, always give the rod itself a good once-over for any scoring or pitting – a damaged rod will just tear up your new gland in no time. Also, don't forget to check the condition of the bore it sits in. Sometimes folks just slap a new one in without cleaning out the old crud or checking for burrs. A clean, smooth surface for the new gland to seat against is key to it doing its job properly and lasting as long as it should.
