550 411 95 WATER PUMP is what keeps your engine's coolant circulating, pulling heat away from the block and heads, or sometimes it's for the charge air cooler system. Without it, that heat just builds up, and you're looking at an overheat situation pretty quick. It's a simple job, really, just moving fluid, but it's absolutely critical for keeping the whole power unit from cooking itself.

When one of these starts to go, you'll often hear a tell-tale squeal or groan from the bearing, especially when it's cold. Sometimes you just notice the engine running hotter than usual, or the coolant level drops without an obvious external leak. If the shaft seal starts weeping, you'll see coolant stains around the pump housing, which is a pretty clear sign it's on its way out. Don't ignore those little drips; they usually turn into a torrent.

When you're swapping one of these out, make sure you clean the mating surfaces thoroughly; a little bit of old gasket material left behind is just asking for a leak. And don't forget to check the tensioner and idler pulleys while you're in there, especially if it's belt-driven. A worn pulley can take out a new pump bearing pretty fast, and then you're doing the job twice.
