On a drill rig, these are everywhere – in the feed system, the rotation head, sometimes even in the boom pivot points. They’re designed to carry the load, spread it out, and let a shaft or pin rotate or slide without tearing itself up. Basically, it’s a sacrificial wear surface that keeps your expensive main components from getting chewed up.

When one of these starts to go, you'll usually notice it. Depending on where it is, you might get some slop in a joint, or a shaft starts to bind up. If it's in a feed system, you might hear a grinding noise, or the feed cylinder might not extend or retract as smoothly as it used to. Sometimes, you'll see excessive heat around the joint, or even metal shavings if it's really bad. That's when you know it's time to dig in, because ignoring it means bigger problems down the line.

Changing these out isn't usually rocket science, but it's important to get it right. Always make sure the housing is clean and free of burrs before pressing in the new one. And don't forget to check the shaft or pin it mates with – if that's scored or worn, the new bearing won't last long. A bit of grease on installation helps too, even if it's a dry bearing, just to get things started.
