Inside, it’s got a bunch of switches and potentiometers that translate your hand movements into electrical signals, which then go to the control system to open and close valves, making cylinders extend or retract. Basically, it’s how you make the machine move where you want it to go, precisely and smoothly, or at least it should be.

When this thing starts to go bad, you’ll usually notice the rig acting a bit wonky. Maybe the boom drifts a little when you let go, or the feed rate becomes inconsistent, jumping around even when you’re trying to hold it steady. Sometimes you’ll feel a dead spot, where you push the stick but nothing happens for a split second, then it kicks in. That’s often a sign the internal contacts are getting worn or dirty. Or, even worse, it might just stick in one position, making it a real fight to get the machine to respond. It’s not just annoying; it can make drilling unsafe and inefficient.

Look, when a JOYSTICK starts giving you grief, sometimes you can try cleaning the contacts if it’s an older style that allows it, but often, it’s just time for a new one.
