It also acts as a barrier, keeping all the dust and crud from the drilling environment out of the sensitive internals.

When one of these seals starts to give up the ghost, you'll usually notice it pretty quick. The most common sign is a slow, persistent hydraulic leak – maybe just a sheen of oil around a cylinder rod or a damp spot on the housing. If you let it go, that weep turns into a steady drip, and before you know it, you're losing system pressure, your cylinder might start to drift under load, or you'll just have sluggish movement. Plus, a failing seal can let all sorts of abrasive dust and water into your hydraulic fluid, which is a fast track to wearing out pumps and valves.

When it's time to swap one of these out, take your time. Clean the groove and the sealing surfaces thoroughly – any old crud left behind will just chew up the new seal. Always use the right installation tools, or at least be super careful not to nick or twist it during assembly; a tiny scratch can lead to an early failure. And here’s a common one: don't forget to inspect the shaft or bore for any scoring or pitting. A brand new seal won't hold for long if it's trying to seal against a damaged surface.
