It’s what gets the bit turning downhole, whether you’re doing DTH or top hammer work. Basically, without it, you're not drilling; you're just pushing a stick.

When this shaft starts to wear, you’ll definitely notice a change in how the rig drills. Usually what happens is you get excessive play in the rotation head, leading to noticeable vibration during drilling. Sometimes, you’ll hear a distinct knocking or grinding sound from the rotation unit, especially under load. You might also see a drop in penetration rate because the torque isn't getting transferred efficiently, or the bit just isn't spinning true anymore.

When you’re swapping one of these out, it’s not just about the shaft itself. Always, and I mean *always*, inspect the bearings and seals that go with it. A worn shaft often means those surrounding components have taken a beating too. And for crying out loud, make sure everything is clean and properly lubricated during reassembly. Skipping that step is a common rookie mistake that’ll just bring you back to the same job way too soon.
