It's not just about the mess though; that fluid loss means reduced lubrication inside the component, which ramps up wear on bearings and gears significantly. You might even hear some new grinding noises or feel excessive heat from the component as things start running dry or get contaminated.

Replacing one of these isn't usually rocket science, but getting it right is key. Always make sure the shaft surface is clean and smooth – any nicks or burrs will just chew up the new seal in no time. And don't forget to pre-lube the lip before installation; a dry start can ruin it right away. Also, check the bore for any damage. Sometimes, the housing itself gets worn, and a new seal won't sit right, leading to another leak pretty quickly.
