This bolt takes a constant pounding, keeping everything aligned and preventing any lateral movement that would just chew up the internal components. Basically, it keeps the whole assembly tight and square, which is absolutely essential for consistent impact and rotation.

When these bolts start to stretch out or even crack, you’ll usually notice a distinct increase in vibration coming from the rock drill itself. Sometimes you’ll hear a new, unsettling clunking sound, especially when that drill is really working hard. What happens is, the clamping force drops off, and things inside the drill start to move around more than they should. This can quickly lead to accelerated wear on your bushings, pistons, and even the front head components. You might even see a noticeable drop in penetration rate, or the drill just feels ‘soft’.

When you’re replacing these, don’t just swap out the obvious broken one. Always check the other side bolts too; if one’s gone, the others are likely stressed. Make sure you’re torquing them properly, to the manufacturer’s spec – don’t just guess. And here’s a common one: always check the condition of the mating surfaces and the threads in the housing. A lot of guys forget to clean out those threads, which means you’ll never get the correct clamping force, no matter how hard you crank on it.
