When one of these tie bolts starts to stretch or, worse, fatigue, you'll often see the first sign as a slow weep around the cylinder's end cap. That's because the clamping force is reduced, letting the seal lose its grip. Sometimes, you might even notice a slight misalignment or a bit of play if you're really looking close, which can lead to premature wear on other components. If it gets bad enough, you could even get a noticeable clunk or shudder in the system as the cylinder extends or retracts, indicating the internal components aren't being held as rigidly as they should be.

Replacing these isn't rocket science, but you absolutely have to follow the torque specs. Over-tighten it, and you'll stretch the new bolt out of spec right away, setting yourself up for another failure. Too loose, and you'll be back dealing with leaks. A common mistake I've seen is forgetting to properly clean the threads and apply a good quality anti-seize or thread locker, depending on the manufacturer's recommendation. Don't skip that step; it makes future service a lot easier and helps maintain the correct clamping force.
